Measurement system for easy registration of scanner data

The components of Register

The set consists of two small and one large reference sphere with integrated prism. Both of the small spheres are attached to the tripod by means of a C-clamp. They are the near targets of the measurement system. The spheres are attached to the connector by means of a gimbal system. This is necessary so that the prism faces the total station optimally without a change of the sphere'’s position.

The large sphere with prism is the distant target which is attached to a prism pole.

The measuring principle

The distant target, in other words the large reference sphere with integrated prism, is positioned at a distance of approx. 10 to 15 meters away from the laser scanner. During scanning, and the distant target and both of the near targets are captured, too. Before, during or after scanning, the spheres' centers are measured by means of the total station. Thus, the center of each sphere is determined with the accuracy that results from the accuracy of the tacheometric measurement. The spheres' centers serve as reference points for the positioning. The quality of the positioning can be improved significantly by use of the software PointCab Register. The so-called fine registration is effected by means of cloud 2 cloud registration.

For whom is the system suited?

Register is perfectly suited for surveyors who combine traditional surveying and laser scanning.

For which projects is the system suited?

The advantages of Register are especially in evidence for capturing elongated objects (such as streets), measuring conductions and walls, large-area site surveying and mining.

What are the advantages of Register?

The easy registration of the scans is a huge advantage. We recommend to perform the registration with PointCab Register. The coarse registration is effected by use of coordinates which have been determined by means of a total station. The fine registration is made by cloud 2 cloud registration.

A further advantage is the accuracy with which the registration can be outputted. For the first time in laser scanning, an output of standard deviations in familiar geodetic form is possible.

Product characteristics - distant target

diameter of the sphere: 100mm
weight: 0.55kg
A precisely integrated prism is located in the center of the sphere.
prism constant: k=-34.4mm / Leica=0
The spherical shape allows an optimum detection from all sides during scanning.
The reference sphere has a special varnish for optimum reflectivity.

Product characteristics - near target

diameter of the sphere: 60mm
dimensions of the connector with sphere: 25 x 11 x 6cm
weight: 0.6kg
A precisely integrated prism is located in the center of the sphere.
prism constant: k=-16.9mm / Leica=+17,5
The spherical shape allows an optimum detection from all sides during scanning.
The reference sphere has a special varnish for optimum reflectivity.
